Frequently Asked Questions

What do Professional Organizers do?

From the NAPO National website: Professional organizers use tested principles and expertise to enhance the lives of clients. By designing custom organizing systems and teaching organizing skills, they help individuals and businesses take control of their surroundings, their time, their paper piles, their lives!

An organizer's services can range from designing an efficient closet to organizing a cross-country move. For homeowners, he or she might offer room-by-room space planning and reorganization, estate organization, improved management of paperwork and computer files, systems for managing personal finances and other records, and/or coaching in time-management and goal-setting.

Are you a Certified Professional Organizer? What does that mean?

Yes, I am certified and have been since the inaugural exam in 2007. I chose certification because I'm committed to my profession and my clients.

I believe certification differentiates organizers who have met certain standards of experience and knowledge. Because certification requires an organizer keep up-to-date with his or her continuing education each year, it allows the public to feel secure in hiring an organizer who is determined to provide the highest caliber of service and dedication.

There are over 300 CPOs in the world, representing the United States, Canada, Australia, Netherlands and Hong Kong. Comparatively, there are approximately 4200 members of the National Association of Professional Organizers.

How long will it take?

The length of time your projects take will be determined by many factors. Some of these include: how quickly you make decisions, the volume of your possessions (how much "stuff" you have), how long you have been in the current situation, how much time you have to devote to the project, how many people will be involved, how large the areas of your home are.

Also essential to the project length are your goals, expectations, your availability and willingness/ability to do "homework" to move the process forward.

If it's only one room that requires organizing assistance, it could take 1 or 2 sessions. If it's an entire home, it would be an ongoing project that could possibly take months.

How much will it cost?

The cost will vary from project to project. Estimates can be discussed at the initial appointment. Professional Organizers in the Bay Area typically charge between $50 - $150/hr based on experience, expertise, specialty and certification. My hourly rate is $90/hr for hands-on organizing and $125/hr for Needs Assessments.

What if I'm feeling embarrassed?

It is not uncommon for clients to initially feel embarrassed. Please know that I have seen all kinds of situations and I am supportive and nonjudgmental. When we work together, every aspect of this process will remain confidential. I will be gentle and work at a pace that is comfortable for you. It is important to realize that you are attempting to make a positive change in your life and to be proud of yourself for taking that initiative.

Will you make me get rid of things?

I will never make you get rid of anything you do not want to. All decisions will ultimately be yours. However, I will ask you questions that may help you make better decisions about your possessions. I want you to enjoy and feel surrounded by the things that enrich your life.

Should I try to straighten up before our first appointment?

No, you don't have to do anything special before we get together. When we meet for our first appointment, I'm looking to see how things work (or, more importantly, don't work) in your "natural habitat." If I can see your unique situation as it usually stands, we can explore together and answer some of these questions: How do you determine where things are placed? Why are some things where they are? How long has it been this way? Has a system broken down?

Do you offer free consultations?

I offer a free initial consultation over the phone, rather than on-site. I find the questions asked and answered during our phone interview provide sufficient information to determine our compatibility to work together and how to proceed.

Do you offer Gift Certificates?

Yes, gift certificates are available. Please ensure your gift will be appreciated by speaking with the recipient prior to contacting me.
